Details
The statue shows Bolívar riding his horse with his right arm raised over his head. In that hand he wields his sword, holding it upwards. He wears a military uniform with great detail, including the gold medal that was once George Washington's.
The Liberator
Bolívar became the most powerful leader in South America, nicknamed "El Libertador" (the liberator).His leadership helped establish what are now the nations of Colombia, Panama, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela. Both Bolivia and Venezuela (officially, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) are named after Bolivar, as are the currencies of both nations (the Bolivian boliviano and the Venezuelan bolivar).
Simón Bolívar
Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) known as "The Liberator" fought in more than 200 battles against the Spanish in the fight for South American independence. Bolívar provided the political and military leadership that freed Bolivia, Colombia (then including Panama), Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela from the Spanish rule.
Gift from Venezuela
Venezuela presented this 27-foot bronze equestrian statue to the United States in 1959.
